Roundstone News 5th September 05
Well we are very noticeably coming to the end of the tourist season in Roundstone, but the good weather for the last few days has been a bit of a bonus bringing a few extra visitors, but on the hand between the 20 chechs and the polish staff of the various business here in Roundstone have all gone back to college in their own country. What sort of season everybody has had, I have no idea at this stage, but it would be well worth while finding out, and perhaps report back within the next few weeks to compare notes so to speak

Community Games:
For the second year running we had the community games and disco for the local kids as well as visitors held on the green field and on the Tennis courts, we also had events for the Adults with the Tug of War and throwing the weights, my thanks to Dave Woods for supervising these events as well as to members of the youth club, Maurice Ryan who was the chef for the B/Q, Eifa Creane who did the Face paintings, Michael Keane, Martin Conneely, Mary Mongan and Michael O’Malley our DJ did a great job with the kids Disco.
I am sure that there are lots more to thank, so no offence meant if I have left some one out.
Johnny Sheehan is the man who sponsored the whole day.
Then in the evening a table quiz in Ryan’s Bar this was infact to raise funds for the play school here in Roundstone, the winning team known as “Montago lost a Ball” Joseph Conneely, Ronan Creane, Nial Griffin and Mickey Mac, there was also a raffle as part of the fund raiser, the total raised was €605, then to end off the day, a Disco for the over Thirties, the whole day was great craic, well done everybody, and many thanks to Johnny Sheehan for his sponsorship.
Photographs of the community Games taken by Robert Bate are on the website under photo events www.roundstone-connemara.com .
Tim Robinson:
Has just published another Book called “Galway County in Stone”, it’s the Geological Heritage of Connemara, and the launch is tomorrow Tuesday at the Ellis Hall at Letterfrack at 2pm, hosted by the Galway County Heritage Forum who are in partnership with the Galway County Council and the National University of Ireland.
Roundstone Pony Show:
Just a little snippet re the forth coming pony show, a couple of weeks ago an appeal was put out for any old mobilia re the last Roundstone Pony show well an old catalogue turned up from Thomas Mullen and he was telling me, that infact the last one was held on the Sunday 2nd August 1992 with the then committee with Tommy McDonagh, Martin Nee James conneely, Festus Keane and Betty Creane.
So it seems that the last one was not in 1981 as one thought, and I was also told that Thomas has found two stud books dating from 1943 and 1951,what is interesting about this that there a lot people from the area in those days who had ponies, I thought that I would pass that little bit of info on, and while we are on the subject of ponies, well done to Ronan who is only 31/2 year he is the son of Thomas Mullen, Ronan won the Archbishop Cup in Clifden with lake side lass in the 4/5 year old mere, no Ronan was not showing the mere in fact as the mere is only a few months older, she was registered in his name, and yet again Paddy the yanks “Roundstone Mary” won her class in Elfin Roscommon and was reserve champion.
The first official full committee meeting of the Roundstone Pony Show will take place next Tuesday, so there will be lots of updates as the programm unfolds, out there in connemara there are some perpetual pony show cups some where, we would love to see them and have them for the opening show.
Marina Update:
Last Tuesday 30th August a delegation from the Roundstone Marina Committee went up to Galway to meet the County Manager Pat Gallagher and the director of Services, John Morgan to disscuss a possible working relationship with the Galway County Council and to explore the possibilty of a capital contribution.
Martin J. Conneely, Orla Conneely, Bill Whelan, Michael King, Josie Conneely (County Councillor) and project manager Niall Connery, the feed back from the GCC seemed quite positive.
Well Wishes:
Congratulations to Donal Nee Junior who has reached his 21st birthday today and also to Mary and Joe Mongan who had their wedding anniversary yesterday.
Good luck and good wishes out to Maggie Creane and Geraldine king who have gone into hospital for tests.
