Roundstone News 9th October 2006
It’s been a very quite week so I do not have a great deal of news, however the weekend just gone, was a busy one .
What with some high tides this weekend luckily the wind was in the right direction, it was quite spectacular in the Harbor; it burst its banks so to speak on Innishnee and in the lower part of the village, but no damage done
Tim Robinson:
I mentioned some weeks ago about the launch of Tim Robinsons new book “Connemara Listening to the wind” which was officially launched in Dublin, well yesterday Tim gave a small reception here in Roundstone to celebrate his book, which by the way is now for sale, and can be bought directly from Tim as from today, €20. Tim read some very funny passages from the book; he also made a startling announcement that as Tim and Maraid had no heirs, they have decided to leave their House to the Galway University, where it will be a center for academics and conferences etc, in fact anything to do with the Arts. This will be a wonderful center for Roundstone, as it will bring people in the village out of season, and the center will also work hand in Hand with the Community Hall for public audiences. Tim informed us that all ready there are a few events going to happen in his house over the next few months.
Ann Conneely:
As it was Joe Conneely’s anniversary of his passing three years ago, Ann gave a very nice lunch party for the family and a few friends in Eldon’s Hotel, and taking about Eldon’s, not sure if it has been mentioned before, the new management will keep the Hotel open with various happenings during the weekends, this is defiantly good news, I hope it works for them.As the _expression goes, Joe Conneely “Always remembered but not forgotten” one of Joe’s prodigy Ronan Joyce who is still with Beola Crafts came second in the all Ireland Cabinet Maker, following in the steps of the McDonald twins and of course Conor O’Malley who were all under Joe
Birthday Parties;
There were a good many people in Roundstone this weekend, because of various birthday parties that were celebrated here for Example, Billy and Ena Smyth, actually it was Ena’s 70th, this family have been coming to Roundstone for many years staying in Eldon’s and as well as that their daughter got married here to David Mc Williams some years ago, and then we had Rory O’Connor another friend of Roundstone celebrated his 60th again another visitor who stays in the Roundstone House Hotel, so there you are, a hive of activity. So congratulations to you both and may you keep visiting us for many years to come yet.
Talking about people coming back I got an E.mail a few days ago from a Brian Clogherty who wants to get Married in Roundstone and wants to have his reception at my place because it transpires that Brian is a direct relative of the Roundstone Clougherty’s / Cloherty’s, and apparently it was his granfather’s Granfather that had built Errisbeg House, so certainly if this is the case it would be very meaningful to be married in Roundstone and have the reception at my place, nice one
Joe Creane:
Congratulations to Joe Creane, who yet again won another major fishing competition, another boat was the prize, if my memory serves me right it’s the third boat over the years that he has one, anyway the prize fish was caught on Lough Sheelan, so well done Joe, now he just off to New Zealand for more fishing, there is no stopping this man.
Ivy House:
One of Roundstone’s Land marks ie Ivy House which is in the centre of the village is up for sale again. I was told today that apparently Ivy house used to be a Hotel, I wonder in what year?
STEPHEN BLAYDS:
Has his 30th birthday on the 12th October 2006. His Mum Rosie and Dad Ian, brother Robert, who, I gather is in Thailand and sister Angela and their partners, Claire and Henry, and Grandma of course, and Kate and her family, the Ferrons, wish him all the very best on his 30th birthday.
