Roundstone News from Ann Conneely 13th November 2006
Unfolding Ideas:
A few weeks ago Tim & Maraide Robinson made the announcement
That they were bequeathing their residence here in Roundstone to Galway University, but in the meantime during their lifetime the University can make use of the premises for seminars, lectures and workshops.
This is great news for Roundstone and already we are receiving the benefits of it, a public presentation & discussion on the tensions between Context and ideas in modern architecture will take place in the local community hall, the speakers are Sean O’Laoire, Sheila O’Donnell and Sean Tuomey
The following Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday Nov 27th to the 29th November a writer’s workshop will take place, and this will be run by the Houston School of Film in conjunction with Galway University. On the Wednesday evening Allegro Houston, daughter of late John Houston (actor, director) will take place in the hall, which will be open to the public.
We will be keeping you up to date on other events to come, which can be found on the Roundstone Website www.roundstone.ie under the title “Unfolding Ideasâ€.
Muscians:
On Friday night last a group of musicians and singers got together
in Mary Kings bar to congratulate and celebrate with Fiacra O’Regan,
Who came first at the Fleath Ceol in Letterkenny with slow airs?
With the tin whistle, and he also got two second places. Fiacra is the son
Of Emir and started playing the tin whistle in the national school
Under the guidance of Noreen 0’Sullivan.
Marty Vaughan:
In the dancing department, Marty Vaughan retained his title as Connacht Champion which is his sixth time. His sister Meave came third, although Marty & Meave come from Clifden they dance here in Roundstone during the Irish nights and their grandmother is Nonie Vaughan nee Devane from Earlough.
Brian Cunningham:
Brought the Cup for Seanos dancing west last week from the Oiroicteas in Donegal, On Saturday night last at a get together in his honor in Recess, a huge crowd turn out to congratulate him. Brian worked in Roundstone for a few summer seasons at Eldons Hotel
Brian entertained us on many occasions with his dancing.
Christmas Boxes:
Some weeks ago I mentioned about the Christmas boxes that were being prepared for sending to children in deprived area’s such as Chernobyl, well I am delighted to say that 54 boxes were put together from the Roundstone area.
Well done to everyone who made this possible and a special thanks to Theresa Walsh and her colleagues who made it happen
Roundstone play ground:
Is well on the way with just a few little things to iron out. The committee will meet with the Lotto committee for the final injection of funds to go towards their submission to G.C.C.
Poker;
Last Friday night at the poker school in Eldon’s a further €35 was added to the kitty for the play ground. Each night all players give one Euro and the winner makes a small contribution. Winners this week was James DeCourcey 1st place and Tom O’Donnell second place.
Organic Gardening:
On Tuesday Nov 21st a talk on Organic gardening will take place in the lower hall. The talk will be given by Caith Curran and it commences at 7.30 and all are welcome. Caith is a keen organic gardener and sells her products every Saturday at the Galway market.
Holidays:
Well it’s really holiday time in Roundstone, it’s the Roundstone people who are the holiday makers.
Joe Creane and his son Ronan are on a fishing trip to New Zealand
His two daughters Ailbhe an Aoife are in South America. I had a phone call from Ailbhe yesterday and she said they were in Buenos Aires and having a great time.
Maureen Vaughan is visiting her daughter in Australia.
Noelle de Courcey has gone to Australia for a few weeks.
Martin O’Donnell and Ellen are in Lanzarotte.
The Clifden Gaelic Football team
Will play in the Connacht Finals next Sunday, with the Flaherty brothers from Toombeola, Ger Burke, Thomas King and Bernard Keaney from Roundstone will be part of the team.
So we wish them all the luck in the world.
John Burke:
Best wished to John Burke who is recovering after an operation and is doing very well I hear. No doubt he will be up and about in time to see his son Gerard who is the Captain of the Connemara all Blacks, to lead his team to take on the Corinthians in the next big game.
Johnny Conneely:
I must say how good it was to see Johnny Conneely back sweeping the streets of Roundstone last Friday. Johnny who works for GCC and who had done such a great job over the summer months says that he is now working on road repairs in the Renvyle area, this is the usual reoccurrence but the pressure must be kept on GCC to keep Johnny in Roundstone.
There were so many complaints about the state of the streets over the past month and I must say it was quite true, but Johnny has to go where he is sent.
Christmas Fair 16th & 17th December 2006:
