Roundstone News 8th May 2006
May Bank Holiday weekend:
As we were unable to give you news last Monday, I thought I give a little run down of the busiest May Bank Holiday we have had for years, literally there were business than ran out of a lot of items, of course there were two weddings over the weekend, that filled the B/Bs, Hotels and certain holiday homes, plus the fact the weather played a great part, a good start for the season.
Also there was an opening of yet another shop in Roundstone, dealing with beach equipment, fishing equipment and an area for tourist information.
Michael Reynolds who has taken over Ferrons shop is responsible for this venture, it’s not fully finished yet, but all the same we wish Michael luck with the shop because it’s really very helpful for the image of Roundstone to have another shop front

Alexander Nimmo:
Another date for your Diary, 27th of May in Eldon’s is the launch of a book by Kathleen Villars Tuitler of the autobiography of Alexander Nimmo, the Scottish engineer, and on the same day a comerative plaque about 15in in diameter, pink ceramic centre with copper band that has been sponsored by John Killeen’s company Cold Chon? To be placed some where on the old pier.
The photo of the plaque can be seen in a day or two on the Roundstone website.

Registration of two year old fillies:
On Friday we had the registration of two year old Connemara fillies on the Green Field, actually it was a nice scene to see the pony’s and their handlers milling around, and all together I think there must have been about twelve pony’s, majority from Roundstone, it reminds one of bygone years, and again I will have a few photos of the scene.

Community Radio:
The Connemara Community Radio 6th Annual Walkathon is taking place on Saturday the 10th & Sunday the 11th of June. This is Connemara Community Radio’s main annual fundraiser and the money raised is used towards transmission costs which are in excess of €12,000. Our target is to raise at least €10,000.The walk will take place over two days and the route will cover more than 30 MILES approximately 10 hours of walking road, track and mountain. If you would like to join the team of walkers and can raise €300 in sponsorship give Gráinne a call at the radio on 41616. Walkers are now in the process of raising sponsorship for this walk and we hope that you will support the walkers in their efforts to raise the €10,000. Connemara Community Radio would like to thank Acton Construction Clifden for their generous support by being the main sponsor covering the walkathon expenses. So this walk is important, I have done it for the last 5 years, any spare few euros to reach my target, I would be very grateful to receive this for this important and worth while cause
Gurteen Beach / Dogs Bay:
Sunday the 21st May 2pm we have to do another beach clean up before the June bank holiday, we do need volunteers to help out, gloves and bags will of course be supplied.
We will do the same format as the last time, bag it and leave it in the Dogs Bay Car Park for collection the following day.
My thanks to Tommy Sullivan (Community Warden) and the Galway County Council for their help in keeping the beaches litter free |
