Roundstone News 4th July 2005

Well Folks here is the news, I have been away in Edinbrugh with the senior members of the, now ex youth club members as it will be the last time we are all together as a group, hence the delay with the news

What a busy week we have had in Roundstone, not to mention the Alcock and Browne flight, of which I am not going to go into all the details, but I was speaking with Lord Peter Smith this evening, who has been a long time visitor to Roundstone and he happened to mention that his brother in Law, Brian did exactly the same flight passage in the name of the firstTransatlantic flight but with a replica remote controlled plane, I can’t recall all the details Peter was telling me, but I just thought I would mention this just to point out, the real interest there is in all circles of life re this flight in 1919.

Community Radio:
The first thing that has to be said is congratulations to the Connemara Community radio as they are now in their tenth year of broadcasting, it takes a lot of work and voluntary help, and money of course to keep the radio going, so what can I say Happy Birthday and keep up the good work.Talking about the community Radio I would just like to thank all those that sponsored me for this years community Radio 2 day walk which took place a few weeks back, the sum that I was able to raise was €325, so thanks everybody, also I would like to mention that as part of the celebrations, Rosie Mc Gurran is showing some of her new works at the Northern Star Gallery, and in true 4th July style, Kentucky Fried chicken is being served and some excellent wine, I may have missed out on the Bourbon, however probably just as well. One minute of silence was observed in memory of fellow artist for Nora KeaneRosie also invited Marcus Hernon as a guest/ friend with his kids Brendán and Panchais, now the reason why I mention this is because the Community Radio will be in Roundstone live tonight from 8pm to 9pm and Brendán Hernon with his brother will give some tunes on their whistles. Brendán inserdentley won 1st place in the Connaught Fleadh and what’s more he also achieved 2nd place in the Galway Fleadh, Brendán by the way plays the Tin whistle. We might also get a tune out of Marcus, their father, So well done Brendán, a true ambassador representing young people for the west of Ireland. In a few days time I will have some photos of the evening up on the website Titled on the events page Community Radio www.roundstone-connemara.com.

Arts Festival:
Well of course the dominant news Is the Arts Festival here in Roundstone, having only just got back from Edinburgh on Wednesday with the troops not quite sure how the first few days went, I am sure Ann gave some details of those few days, however I went to see our own Liz and Yvonne Keane perform followed by Dervish, they were great and to end off Liz and Yvonne played with Dervish, wow that was quite something. Friday night there was a talk and slide show with Kevin Cronin who is part of the crew with Paddy Barry sailing around the north east passage and telling us his extraordinary experience from the ice packed land, you might remember that in 2001 he was also part of the crew for the expedition for the North west passage. Then Sunday the last day of the festival with music in the streets and finally the annual arts week parade, which was led by Helen Flynn from peepsie with many children local, visiting kids, and adults in magnificent costumes from all over the country, it was truly spectacular and of course it gave the village a great atmosphere. Talking about the Arts festival, the original framed poster which was painted by one of the Artists from last years residency is up for sale, no set price I suppose the best offer will see it gone and the monies will be put back into the festivals account, the poster will be on the website in a few days time or you can just contact Ann Conneely

Stable Gallery:
Re-opened at Errisbeg House on Thursday showing a new collection of paintings from Declan O’Connor, a good majority of you may have seen floating around in his car painting, his works are refreshingly different, with the influence of yeat’s for his horses and strong landscapes. If anybody is interested in having a look at them they are in fact on the website www.roundstone-connemara.com scroll down the Roundstone Home page, you will also find some of the photos of the parade with all the kids

Pony Show:
Congrats to Martin J. Conneely who got 1st prize yesterday with his yearling filly “Evalough Lasairiona” at the Maam cross show, interestingly enough the same Filly two weeks ago got third at the Galway County Show, so a win this time makes it all the more sweeter, another local man Paddy the yank got a first at the Athlone Agriculture show with his 10 year old mare “Roundstone Mary” and then a forth in Athenry, oh talking about ponies some months ago I happen to mention about the possible revival of the Roundstone Pony Show, well, it will now become a reality for the year 2006, in the latter part of June, the venue is on Farrell’s road, on a wonderful piece of land courtesy of Paddy the yank, and I happen to know that a tidy sum as been spent on the ground to bring the pony show to a reality, so every now and again I will have updates as to its progress, but for the time being the first task is to form a committee.

Congratulations:
To Ann’s daughter and son in law Pat and Noleen O’Neil on the birth of their new baby boy who was born a few days ago, and the name they have given the lad a good strong one Jack, Jack O’Neil, it has a nice ring about it, so we wish you all well.

Blue Flag:

Well done to Young Clara Mongan daughter of Joe and Mary Mongan, Clara was the winner of the Blue Flag competition, this was a competition that was sponsored by the Galway County Council for the best poster representing their area’s, Clara’s prize was a voucher from Eason’s up to the sum of €20, and I am told the winning poster is on display at Gurteen beach, well done ClaraNora

Keane:

On a sadder not, Nora Keane Joe Raffertys sister passed away on Friday morning at 8.30 am, its always difficult to now what to say except that we would like to express our condolences to all the family members on behalf of myself and of course the community.Nora will be remembered for her very charming and delicate watercolour paintings, so as I say our condolences, and may she rest in peace.
