Roundstone News 23 rd January 06
Rumors:
To start off I would just like to put to bed a rumor that has been flying around the village for some, it was all to do about our doctor Aoingus and
Nichola Flavin were leaving Roundstone for good.
I spoke to the doctor this morning; there is no truth in it. How, I think the rumor could have started is that they were away for a few weeks, while nicola was giving berth to their new daughter Orla.
So there you are, they are not going. And of course our congratulations to them both.
Pony show:
Tomorrow we have the first pony show committee meeting of the year; the 9 th of July is the date.
Now we are looking into the Insurance, and we will discuss a website for the pony show. www. roundstoneponyshow.com
For the website if anybody could produce to me some photos of ponies or photos from past shows, I would be glad to hear from you.
Oh and talking about website, I mentioned last week about the DVD on the Roundstone Beaches Project that could be seen, people have informed me that they could not find it, I was not surprised, it is in fact in the top menu of the Roundstone Website with the heading “Roundstone Beaches Project”
Tidy Towns:
Ann mentioned last week of the Walk about the village in preparation for the 06 competition to find out how we can improve the look of the village, one of the main items that had to be done was the re building of the wall outside Ryan’s, and so thanks to the FAS lads the job is done and a mighty job it is too, and just to give you an idea what we were looking at for example to upgrade the bottle bank with new bins, NCT cameras to be installed etc, in fact it would much too long to go through the whole list, so we are having a public Tidy Towns meeting on the Thursday of the 26 th 8pm In Eldon’s Hotel to go through the findings, also after this meeting Mark Malloy the Environmental Officer from Galway County Council will be down with us again on the first February to advise us on the litter awareness project where the best place to erect the litter free Zone stones which will be at each end of the village, Mark is very keen for us to earn a few more hopefully brownie points for the competition. So we need as many people from the village to come to the Tidy towns meeting for a progress report and some brain storming.
Community Hall :
We have just heard from the FEC, i.e. Sean McLochlainn who is the Adult Education Officer he informs us that they are now in a position to provide range of Adult and community Education programmes in the centre, such as issues relating to young people and to offer a part time youth reach programme, the unemployed and the under employed Adults, An Advocacy Service, career information Service, Adult Literacy etc, and all the programmes will offer certification, this is great to able to have all these programmes in the community hall in Roundstone, but this can not happen until we conform to a quality Assurance Framework and be legally compliant until we have proper washing and toilet facilities, which is are next target and final stage of the upgrading of the lower community Hall, so be patient we will get there with some funding that is available, we really need about another €35,000 to complete the project.
Rosie McGurran:
Recently attended the opening of an exhibition of paintings from the UTV Collection (Ulster Television). The exhibition comprises of work collected by UTV over the past forty years and represents a broad range of mostly Ulster artists. UTV decided to use the painting they had acquired from Rosie in 2000 as the image for the invite and publicity, normally the painting titled "Waiting" hangs in the UTV boardroom. Rosie made the painting some time ago for her first solo exhibition at the Temple Bar Gallery in Dublin, it was then selected for purchase by UTV when she toured the exhibition to the Old Museum Arts Centre in Belfast.
The West of Ireland was well represented at the exhibition in Queen's University including work by part time Roundstone resident, Cecil Maguire. The late Gerard Dillon, Arthur Armstrong and George Campbell, all one time visitors to Roundstone, were also represented and it was a great honor for Rosie to have her work placed beside theirs. Curator Amanda Croft explained that she had placed these artists together as a representation of the strong links between Roundstone and Belfast artists and as an acknowledgement of Rosie's work to preserve these links. The opening of the exhibition was broadcast on UTV with interviews from Rosie McGurran and Carol Graham, President of the RUA.
