Roundstone News 13th February 2006
Happy Valentines Day to everybody across the water
Well I must say we have had some great weather over the last few weeks, and everything is very much coming alive in the garden, masses of frog spawn.
Spring is very definitely in the air, but the downside just beware everything is very dry so just to watch out for the gorse fires, actually so far so good no problems as yet.
Tonight we have another possible future presenter from Roundstone Cormac Lowry, making his debut with the Roundstone News who has for the past few weeks gaining some experience in the community Radio studio’s as a recorder, and also as a presenter.
So, what I am getting at we are going to share the news tonight, actually its great for me, Cormac, x youth club member but was also the youth Chairman for a period of time and here he is now a few years later, working with me again, and perhaps when some of his own young friends hears his voice on air it just might encourage a few more young people to join me in the regular Monday broadcasts.
Tidy Town:
Well, we are getting close to the month of March when we fill in the application for the tidy towns competition, we certainly have brought a few items forward to enhance the village, for example, the new bottle bank bins will be in place and as an added bonus we will have an extra bin for cloths as part of the “Concern” collection, not sure if the church car park will be lined in time.
Pending on the powers that be, NCCT cameras will be in place in the church car park, its not just to stop the dumping, but also to protect the cars should in the unlightly event a car gets stolen in the park, its happened before.
The litter free stones hopefully will be in place by March thanks to the FAS lads and Donal Nee the FAS supervisor.

Evan Malloy:
It is also hoped that next week RDC will be meeting with Evan Malloy, who is the Senior Environmental Officer from Galway County Council, his predecessor was Michael Dolly who was very good to Roundstone in so many ways, RDC would like to discuss various items that need to be attended too in Roundstone, such as the re building the wall down by the National School to have that completed, pot holes on both side of the village, Parking spaces on the pier and of course sewage and water.
Gurteen and Dogs Bay;
My grateful thanks to members of the youth club, Diamuth Vaughan for his truck and trailer, Kieran Mullen for his quad bike and trailer, and helpers Mary Vaughan, Cynthia Vaughan and Peggy Ward, for the great clean up on the beaches last Sunday. We in fact collected 93 bags and a load of plastic, it was left in the Dogs bay car park overnight, and thanks to Tommy Sullivan (Community Warden) had arranged to have it taken away the next day. Good work everybody and well done.
Talking about Tommy Sullivan, he informs me he will be the Community Warden on a permanent basis as from now on.
Mary Cook
Our deepest Sympathy to Tony cooks wife and Son Johnny Cook, with the loss of Mary Cook from Weymount here in Roundstone who passed away at the grand old age of 99 on the 28th January 06. Mary was buried in the grounds of St Mary’s Church.
Marie Nee:
Our symphies and condolences To Mickey Nee who’s wife Marie passed away and was buried in Gurteen on Saturday, and of course to Marie’s brothers and sisters, Josephine, Jackie, Noel and Paddy and to all the relations. Marie was one of those extraordinary women who worked hard and I suppose like us all some burdens had to be carried this she did with great dignity, I can not think of a nicer tribute more really than words could possibly express the respect that Marie and Mickey received from her immediate family, and all the friends and the two horses with their riders escorting the cortege to her final resting place, Marie had a great love for the Connemara pony. If I am not mistaken the last time there were horses leading a cortege was Tommy McDonagh’s which was very moving, as well as Marie’s.
What more can be said except to say that Marie will be missed by a great many people, so may she rest in peace?
Our congratulations to Tom and Mary O’Donnell on their wedding Anniversary
