Rosie McGurran came to Roundstone in 2000 as an invited artist for Roundstone Arts Week residency, she decided to stay an left her native Belfast to live and work there. In 2001 she established Northern Star Gallery & Studio where she makes and sells her work. Also in 2001 she established the inishlacken Project, an island based visual arts project in memory of the late Belfast artist Gerard dillon who lived there in the 1950's.
Rosie McGurran is a graduate of the University of Ulster and a former Arts Council of Northern Ireland Fellow to the British School at Rome. she has been the recipient of many awards and bursaries including, The Victor Treacy Award, The Mills Selig Award,The Daler Rowney painting prize and recently a major comission award from the Arts Council of Ireland. At present she
working on this commission with the Galway writer in residence, Ursula Rani Sarma. In 2002 Rosie Mc Gurran was elected an Associate member of the Royal Ulster Academy.
Rosie McGurran has exhibited her work most recently at Provanhall house, Glasgow and Indiana university. Other exhibitions include, Galway City Hall, Temple Bar Gallery, Dublin, The Wexford Arts Centre, The Old museum Arts Centre, Belfast, The Linenhall Library, Belfast, Gallerie Faouedic, Lorient, France and as part of the Tulca festival of visual arts in Galway. Collections include Galway University, Ulster Television, British Midland, The National Self Portrait Collection of Ireland, Farmleigh House, Galway City and County Council Collections.
Rosemary Carr is an elected member of The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, she works mostly from the landscape of Connemara and exhibits her work during the summer months at Northern Star Gallery.
The Inishlacken project is an annual event commemorating the life and work of Gerard Dillon. Workshops are held on the island over two days, all are welcome to visit the island or take part in a workshop. The island is uninhabited now and is a doorway in to the past, it provides stunning views of the Connemara landscape and offers a peaceful and open environment for artists to make their work. In 2004 Rosie McGurran completed a 20 x 8ft Mural painting of the entire landscape of Inishlacken island, the work called, "Beloved" pays tribute to the island, the people who lived on it and Gerard Dillon. It was acquired by Galway University where it now hangs in the Orbsen building. For details of present and ongoing events contact Rosie Mcgurran.
Norhtern Star Gallery & Studio is located in the centre of Roundstone, open every day throughout the summer, painting lessons are also available. Roundstone is one of the most visually unique villages in Ireland and is an ideal location to learn to paint or improve painting techniques.
