Roundstone News 9th May 2011

This is Ann Conneelly’s news bits from last week and this week included just to bring everybody up to date .

Well now that all the holidays are over for another while

Roundstone has got very quiet again although there is still a trickle of tourist coming to stay, eat and to visit our lovely beaches and village.

RDC.

Roundstone Development Council meets tonight

18 members have been elected on to the committee

And tonight they will be seeking sub committees from the members to deal with different areas i.e. Fundraising Tidy Towns, Community Hall, Infrastructure, and Heritage.

They also plan to replace the sigh for notices at the entrance to the hall, this we will all welcome it is many years that the old one served us. It was built by Ronan Creane when he was just starting out in his career I even think it was before he completed his time in the Letterfrack Furniture Making School

Roundstone 8K Race

Roundstone are preparing them selves for the forthcoming 8k race which will take place on May 21 that is the week-end after next it will be a nice leisurely race to commence with as this is the first year of this event to raise funds for the RNLI, but no doubt as time goes on it will extend. It will also be a week-end of tradional music and entertainment for all. So do make Roundstone your destination for the 20th & 21st May. You can check out their website on www.roundstonebay8k.com

Roundstone National School;

Roundstone National School St Eannas have just been awarded the Green Flag. The pupils have worked very hard this past year to achieve this and today confirmation arrived that they are to collect the Flag in the Galway Bay Hotel Salthill on May 24th. All the school pupils were involved, but 6th class were the driving force behind it all and we are very proud of them. This will also be a factor in the forthcoming Tidy Town application and will help with an extra point or two in their favour. Congrats to the children in St Eannas; their teacher Michael McDonagh and Ashling Ryan and all the help they received from their secretary Emer Regan

RIP:

The death has taken place of Mrs Little nee Gorham of Inishnee Roundstone. Although, she has been living in Ballyconneely for a number of years. She was finally laid to rest in the Roundstone Cemetery of Gurteen. She is survived by her daughter Crissy & Sons. May she rest in peace.

Monty Halls Great Escapes:

The great explorer and Marine Biologist who spent six months in Roundstone last summer with his crew from BBC 2 have just launched his book Monty’s Irish. It is a lovely light read about his time here on Innishnee Roundstone with his escapades on sea and land. I am half way through my book and thoroughly enjoying it. I do not think it has hit the local shops yet but I got my copy through www.Amazon .ie. That’s the way to purchase it

We will let you know when the BBC series on his time in Ireland will take place, at present they are looking to later in the summer. I finished the book on Monty Halls great Escape relating to his time in Roundstone, which was a really enjoyable read. He spoke very highly of certain people who helped him and introduced him to different aspects of |Irish life & customs and their ways, their was great respect he wrote about Roundstone and its people, Connemara and the west coast of Ireland on a whole .I am sure he will pass our paths again.

May week-end

Although not as busy as Easter, still a lot of the families who have their own homes staying on to make the most of the wonderful weather we have just had. It will be sad to see them all go back to school and work but lets hope that the rest of the summer will be as busy and it will make everyone happy..

The Cancer Fund raising Horse Ride:

from Roundstone to Clifden Easter Sunday was the brain child of Joe MacNamara who lives in Clifden but originally was a Roundstone man was a huge success with 40 riders taking part and riders and horses coming from as far as East Galway, Moycullen, Oughterard as well as local riders A Bar-Bi -Qui was put on for them at Tom Finneran’s at the end of the Bog Road was courtesy of Joe Lynch Super Value Clifden. Joe Mac is happy to announce that the sum of €6ooo was raised for Hospice. There is talk that this will become an annual event. It was wonderful to see the children riding alongside the adults and a ride through the town on Clifden to finish it off was a great spectacle for all the visitors. Speaking of riding Alanna Sullivan of Innishnee daughter of John Sullivan & Siobhan Casburn Sullivan clocked two all Ireland Championships in the Prelim Finals in Cavan over the weekend. She also got a special prize sponsored by the Connemara Breeders Society for the highest places Connemara Pony. Alanna who is 11 years was riding against adults in all those categories.

Alwen Moran & Siobhan Casburn also represented the Cleggan Riding School.

Roundstone Country Markets:

This is their third Sunday. So far the organisers are very pleased with sales in the Roundstone area. Easter Sunday was the busiest they ever had.
