Roundstone News 6th June 2011

Roundstone was busy this week end. Listening to the comments of the business’s it seems this bank holiday weekend was better than last year, which is some thing

Roundstone Children’s fun run:

Probably one of the best turn outs for the children’s Fun run, this year, what made it more entertaining a good few more adults took part, either walking, pushing a buggy, piggy backing the kids, even a dog with its tongue hanging out took part with its handlers and two legged and three legged runners. Of course as most of you now it is part of the Youth in Action fund raiser, a very worthy cause. Then there was a disco with Mike O’Malley on the play ground lawn and of course the Bouncing castle.

My thanks to the forum team, Seamus Lowry for the water, Ann Conneelly in the rear of the runners with her car and Jane Needham as the lead car. Some photos of the run should by now be on the Roundstone Website.

Dolphins:

An interesting little story, one of my guest’s who is no stranger to swimming in the sea, went down to dogs bay for a morning swim, this was Saturday 10 am, a Pod of Dolphins had come to feed, or to play, so with his brother they dived in to join them half expecting with their presence might scare the Dolphins away, to their surprise no more than 30 yards from the shore two of the Dolphins separated from the pod to investigate, he was telling me that for the next five minutes it was a magical moment and some what scary as the dolphins circled them almost for the lads to touch them, they apparently dived under to get a better look, what was amazing they told me was the sound they were making which was almost deafening. I feel it’s a brave thing to do, even though dolphins have a reputation of being very friendly. I thought that June was very early for them to come this far west, however the Dolphins stayed around for the whole day, making their way right into the Roundstone Harbour jumping and generally what looked like having fun of course much to the delight of our visitors and locals alike. Pity these things do not happen every year so as to be able have another sort of Entertainment in Roundstone to add on to the annual events page of the Roundstone website. In fact Monty Hall while he was in the west with the BBC had a sound recording and a monitor devise for the Dolphins and the porpoise some where near Cashel Bay, the recordings so far show that these wonderful creatures spend a lot of time along our coast.

50/50 Draw: Held at the Roundstone House hotel, Roy Griffin from O’Dowd’s won €525 Euros; Vaughan’s Kitchen staff won the attendance €25. The unattendance was given to Denis Swift from Galway also for €25.00. Just to mention as part of the 50/50 is towards the erection of an all weather arena for the new generation of young riders.

Forum: At a later date there will be a Farm safety course Teagasc in co operation with Forum Connemara Ltd which will be run in Roundstone soon, this is important for all farmers as they are required by law to have a Farm Safety statement. For more information and to book a place just ring Brendan O’Malley on 095 41116 or on his mobile 0879633366

The body of Joe King (Thomas) late of London, Carlow and Erlough Roundstone was laid to rest yesterday in Gurteen Cemetery. Joe who was a regular visitor and kept in constant touch with his relations here in Roundstone paid a visit six weeks ago and his mission was to pick out his grave site see to the graves of his parents and brothers and say farewell to us all. He was a remarkable man who

took great care of Roundstone lads when they first set foot in London, his house was always open to them and he set them up in work, judging by the amount of people who came both on Sat evening and again on Sunday to say farewell to him I would say there were many he helped along the way. Some lovely stories were told about his life. He is survived by his wife Greta who was from Inishnee, 3 sons and five daughters, 36 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

May he rest in peace.

Tidy Towns Tuesday last 13 members of the tidy towns committee came together to plan and prepare for this year’s entry. Last years results were read out and discussed. Despite the great effort which was made with all the tubs and baskets of flowers placed all over the village we only gained 3 points. A lot of the plants died in need of watering. We did have very high winds shortly after putting them out which did not help. This year we are asking members of our community to donate for a tub or a basket and then to take care of them for the summer. At present these are being planted and you can contact Mary T King with your donation. We looked at ways to improve the over all points and tidiness seem the one. We only got 15 out of the possible 30. The adjudicator spoke of the signage in the centre of the village as being tatty and suggested that we do an audit of our signs. It was decided from the meeting to have a new public information sign at the top of the Hall Rd, To write to CIE to replace the rusted bus time table and stop sign and to approach people who have signs in the village with the hope of having them upgrading. All of this is of course with the best intentions of enhancing the village which is in every body’s interest.

We would like to congratulate the children of Scoil Enna’s National School who will be collecting their green flag this Wednesday from Galway Co Council.. This should help us to gain a point or two extra as well.

Next Wednesday evening weather permitting, we hope for a trimming and general clean up in the village so do come along and give us a hand. 6 men have already volunteered

But the more the merrier and ladies you are invited as well.

Well done to Martina on her great job on the boat at Maggie’s corner

We will be posting last years results in the information box or you can down load them from Tidy Town Competition 2010/ Roundstone. Perhaps from reading it you may see a way to help us improve for this year. Watch out for our new Tidy Town jackets which we have acquired and do help us along in any way you can.

Condolences to Johnny Sheehan on the death of his mother in Navan.
