Roundstone News 3rd October 2011

Not a great deal of news this week, as things have become very quite here in Roundstone, well apart from the weekends there still is a bit of activity.

Registration for the evening classes with the north west Connemara adult education took place last week and am glad to say that one of the classes providing we had at least five students is a cookery class demonstration with Kieran O’Shaughnessy, chef with E.J. King, will be commencing on the Wednesday of the 12th October 7pm to 9pm for eight weeks, there are still a few more places should anybody want to avail of this cookery demonstration

October weekend activities:

Saturday the 29th October race nights, with Brendan O’Shaughnessy 9 pm in the Shamrock bar with music afterwards, all are welcome this event promise’s to be a fun night with many surprises.

The country Market: Will be in place on the Sunday of the 30th October.

There will also be on the same Sunday a fund raiser for the Tidy Town’s fund, a car boot sale held on the tennis courts, the cost will be €15 per Car, so there is plenty of time to collect up all the items you do not need for the sale. On that same day a Halloween fancy dress party in the Shamrock Bar.

Johnny Sheehan is also organizing “Kick a football through a goal post in the Harbour, rather like the golf ball onto a platform. Between Ann and my self we will keep you up dated as the arrangements unfold of further events. It’s the last bank holiday before Christmas to create entertainment before we settle down for the dreaded winter

Roundstone Garda Barracks:

Ann touched on the subject last week of the possible closure of the Roundstone Garda Barracks

I feel we should not let the Garda station, be shut down, should this happen it could be leaving us potently without any Garda presence and leave us wide open, yes, you might say its hardly used, and Garda presence is not very often, but it helps to have the Garda shield on the wall at the barracks, just to let people know that at times we do have a Garda presence’s and for the Garda’s administration purpose’s. I heard that Rosmuck and Carna have already started to protest about the closure of their Garda barracks; I don’t now how anybody else feels, I think we should also have our voices heard. RDC is holding their monthly meeting tonight, and of course amongst other issues, the Barracks is very much on the Agenda.

Note for the Diary;

There will be the annual mass on Gurteen grave yard for all soles day on the 6th November 2.30pm. I mention this now so that it gives plenty of time to Tidy up your graves should it be necessary.

Weekend in Inishboffin:

There was a Seanos competition weekend in Inishboffin, through the grape vine I found out that Maeve O’Neil from Ballyconneelly, grand daughter of Ann Conneelly received first prize for the under 12’s, and to John Joyce from the Roundstone parish, Recess, received first prize for the under 16’s, so well done to you both, great ambassadors for the west.

50 / 50 Draw:

Was won this week by Liz Devane with the sum of €230, there’s a few bob for you Liz to go on another trip some where.

The Local lotto now stands at €5’700, with a role over next week of €150.

Turf Cutting:

Finally, a note has just come across my desk, re the banning of turf cutting; I have just been told the date to object to this proposal has been extended to Wednesday 5th October for any body to lodge your objection. The objection must be in writing and to forward a map of your plot, and send it to D.A.O.S, 7 Ely Place, Dublin 2 or you can email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
