Roundstone News 27th June 2011

Corpus Christi: Thanks to Father Jarleth we had a Corpus Christi procession through the village and Benediction and the blessing of the boats and village down on the lower quay. For a few years now there has not been a Corpus Christi procession, so it was really nice to have it back again. The weather was not all that kind to us but this was ignored. On a personal note, as tradition has been over the Years it was nice to have Michael Ferron one of the oldest carrier of the canopy and Seamus Lowry who at that time carried one of the poles for the late Mikey Ryan and the two back poles, Mikey’s son Maurice and as Sean De Courcey was not available his son Kevin represented his father. Call me a sentimental old fool, but it was nice to have the four of them leading the procession with Father Jarleth. My thanks to the members of tidy towns committee, Pastoral Committee, the Roundstone choir, Martina Conneelly, to all others who helped out on the day and to Feichin Mitchell who at such notice and with good grace produced his sound system, more importantly to Father Jarleth Heraty for bringing a tradition back into the village.

National School Graduation: Friday six of the 6th class from the National School graduated, Michael McDonagh, Jamie Devane, Lee Anne King, Siobhan Mannion, Maeve Ryan and Luke Joyce, Father Jarleth Heraty celebrated Mass at the School. It was a lovely occasion, what with next years graduates giving little discourses of memories of situations of their colleagues of the now passed of this years graduates, followed by their principle teacher, Mehall McDonagh saying some thing about each of them, all their little stories were hilarious. A very relaxed and enjoyable afternoon with music and Tea afterwards. All we can do now is to wish these six guys all the very best and luck for the future for the next stage of their lives. Some photos can be seen on the Roundstone Website under “Photo Events”.

Green Flag: The weather being so bad, there was supposed to be the hoisting of their well earned green flag as part of the celebrations, Anne Conneelly who was to going to raise it, was cancelled, however Mehall was telling us, that in fact the award was given to the school in Galway some days ago, so as a compromise young Allan Conneelly was so excited that when the pole was erected and the flag that they received which was last week, so with a sense of pride he grabbed the flag as no one else new how to hoist it, Allen showed them how and did it himself much to the amusement of the school and teachers. A proud achievement for the school gaining the flag, and of course need I say it a few brownie points for the Roundstone Tidy Towns competition. Well done to everybody.

Sam Reynolds: Sam Reynolds, son of Michael and Carol Reynolds, is holding his first Photographic Exhibition titled “Aspects” at the Connemara National Park as from the 1st July to the end of the month, to get a taste of his work, Sam has a website www.samreynoldsphotography.ie . So when you get a moment it will be worth to go to the park and have a look.

Errisbeg House Open Garden 3rd July Open Garden day at Errisbeg House, in aid of Cancer Care West, with perennial plants for sale as well as Garden Ornaments from England being brought over for the day with Julie Foster, the day opens from 11am to 6pm, coffee and tea etc will be served. Adults and children are all welcome. As we do not have an arts week this year, this is just some thing to bring into the area for visitors and our own people alike as some thing different and possible to bring another annual event into the village of Roundstone, if this works. It would be nice to have your support, naturally weather permitting.

Tidy Towns: Things are progressing well for the tidy towns competition in Roundstone village, with lots of flowers all over the place, a lot of strimming has been done along the verges to the village, and on up to Gurteen, and of course litter pick ups. The month of July is the all important month, never knowing when the judicator will arrive so we must keep the momentum to keep the village looking good. The tidy town committee meets every two weeks, therefore tomorrow night 8.30 pm Lower Hall is one of those meetings and all are welcome for your input.

Dogs Bay: As Dogs Bay for the second year has gained the green award, there will be a walk, and talk with Noirin Burke on sea weed and shell fish and to discover what these beaches have to offer, it is all for free by the way, Sunday 3rd July Dogs Bay 1pm, if there are children that would like to go they would have to be accompanied by an Adult.

50/50 Draw: which was held in O’Dowd’s Bar was won by Caroline Mullen, with a total of €460, appropriately enough, daughter to Pat and Bernie Mullen. Next Saturday the draw will take place in the Shamrock Bar.

Fashion Show and Show Queen: In aid of the Roundstone pony show, also the election of a show queen in the Community Hall on the 8th July which is a Friday. More details on this event as it unfolds which will be passed on to Ann’s news next week i.e. next Monday, also not to forget if you have any metal to be collected, for free, just ring Paddy the Yank or Pat Mullen

Roundstone News 20th June 2011 (Ann Conneelly)

Father Jarleth Heraty: On Sunday evening the people of Roundstone gave a lovely celebration party for Fr Jarleth our parish priest who was ordained a priest 25 years ago this month. It commenced at 6pm with a Mass which was attended by our community and members of Fr Jarleth’s family who travelled from Westport to be with him on the occasion. A great array of food and drinks was provided by the Roundstone Ladies I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who brought along food and drink, Fechin Mitchell & Paddy Newman provided the music for the dancers. Meadhbh O’Neill did her Seanos dances, Joe McDonagh and Olive from Dundalk sang a few songs, PJ. Mc Erney played the accordion. It was a wonderful evening enjoyed by everyone and a lovely chance to meet Fr. Jarleth on a one to one basis. And as always at the end of the evening we all said we should do this more often our Community hall is such a joy to work in and a great venue for a party..

Corpus Christi: On Sunday next weather permitting we will have a return of our Corpus Christi procession. It will proceed throughout the village right after 12 Mass. It will leave the church and go up by the medical clinic, down through Fuschia Lane, continuing on to the bottom of the village and then Benediction and blessing of the boats on the Pier and back to the Church through the village. It is wonderful to have this old tradition brought back to our village and we would love to see our neighbouring villages come and join us for this great event. Hopefully the children will play a big part in it. It is also an opportunity to give the houses a lick of paint and a general clean up of the village which is great for our tidy town entry.

A Tidy Town Get together and clean up will take place on Wednesday evening at 7pm meeting at the lower pier and clearing from Robinson’s wood into the village and a really good cleanup of the Pier so as many people as possible would be really appreciated. Mary T and Martin 0’Malley have done a good job on the painting of the children’s play area and will be continuing on this again on Wednesday and would love some help. It is all for the good of the village and hopefully get us a few extra points.

50/50 Draw: On Sat night in Kings Bar Ann Conneely won the 50/50 and got €440, attendance went to Barbara McElnery from Innishnee.

The 50/50 who is the brain child of Pat Mullen one of the Pony Show Committee is very pleased with their takings to date. The Pony Show takes place on the 10th of July in our show grounds on Farrell’s Rd and is promised to be bigger and better than ever and this year, they are having a Ladies Day with a prize for the best dressed lady……So ladies..You are being told and giving you plenty of time to prepare.

Birthday wishes: To Sharon Nee whose birthday is on Thursday and to Lauren Conneely will celebrate her birthday this day week.
