Roundstone News 21st November 2011

Observation: Just before I go into the news, just an observation to relate to you, just five days ago I had in the garden a bumper mass’s of holy berries, this morning not a single berry left, I wonder what that is a sign off, they say that it is a sign of a hard winter to come, that’s one point, even more strangely if not eerie , for quite some time now, I have not heard or seen any of the small song birds, around the garden, which is very unusual in my grounds, even by putting out some food to tempt them back, which as I say is odd for the gardens of Errisbeg, I just wonder if any body else out there has noticed the lack of small song birds around your garden.

Community Tourism Meeting: Which will be held in the lower community Hall tomorrow Tuesday evening at 8pm, and we have a quest speaker Alice Kennelly from forum that has helped many communities to progress with their endeavours. The year 2012 could be a very important one for us, particulaly with the promotion that Monty Hall great escape has done for us in Roundstone / Connemara, we can not afford to just let things happen we have to create events, we have to make sure the potential new visitors who have perhaps come to Roundstone for the first time to seek out Monty’s trail, we have to show our visitors what our village is about and what Monty saw during his time here in 2010, it is for this reason to have a brainstorm evening to gather some idea’s as to how we can show more off the village and its culture, we really must all pull together on this one, therefore we encourage all the members of the community the business’s, not just the shops, but the B/B owners, hotels in fact to any body who depends on tourism to take part at this meeting for a brain storming session to see what we can come up with.

American Tea Party: Another note for the Diary, on the 2nd December, which is a Friday, an American Tea Party will be held in Eldon’s Hotel. Each Table will have a host, and each person brings some thing to eat, it can be what ever you like. There is a cover charge of €5.00 per person, part of this money will help to pay for the live music, which by the way will be with Fehie Mitchell and our own Michael Connolly, now you have it, I feel some dancing coming on with these two and what ever is left over monies wise will go toward the tidy towns plants.

Annual Christmas Party: On the 18th December Maurice Ryan will be holding his annual Christmas party in the community Hall for the children and Adults alike, there will be lots of things to look forward to, food, drinks, hot punch for the adults, a visit from Santa etc. This will kick off at 12.30. On the same day there will be a Christmas fair in the lower Hall as well as stalls out side in the car park, if any body wants to have a table to sell any thing just get in contact with Maurice to book a place / table on 086 8104514. Sounds as if this will be a busy fun day.

Tidy Towns: We are certainly not sitting on our laurels, what with between the FAS team, and John Conneely and Paul Keaney on a TUS scheme who interdentally are doing a fantastic job on one of our potential golden mile walks on Innishnee, and our thanks to Mary T King who has completely re planted all the barrels with winter plants for the Christmas period even in the winter the village looks good. On going work is still in action all the time in preparation for the year 2012, with Heritage walks, cycle routes etc. What needs immediate attention are the pot holes on the Fair Green road to the cottages, perhaps if there was some one from Galway County Council would you please have them filled, they are getting too deep and potently dangerous, with people walking home at night there just might be an accident.

Grave Yard Mass: Last Sunday we had the blessing of the grave yard with Mass in Gurteen, considering the high winds a very good turn out, and my thanks to Mickey Nee for the use of his horse box to house Fr Jarleth during his mass

Garda Barracks: As from today over 5 hundred signatures have been sent up to the Garda commissioner with a covering letter re the potential closure, now it’s just a waiting game.

St Vincent de Paul: Ann mentioned last week about the opening of a shop looking for good quality cloths & household items for this charity, but had no dates for you, so here they are the St Vincent de Paul shop will be open on December 15, 16, 17, and 18 opening times will 10-6 Thursday 10-9 Friday 10-6 Sat and 12-6 Sunday. However the actual office will be open to receive goods on the 11th of December the office/ shop is located in Clifden in the old super valu shop, I also noticed that at Glynsk House in their shop Calendars of Connemara are also being sold for the St Vincent de Paul, so if you have no clothes etc to donate perhaps the purchase of a calendar will certainly help this worthy cause.

Birthday Wishes: Birthday wishes to David McDonagh and his brother Ian who celebrated their birthdays this week, David 22 yrs and Ian his 17th congratulations to you both.

Ann’s Roundstone News and Round Ups November 14th 2011

The Week-end in Roundstone was relatively quiet with a lot of the premises closed for the end of season or taking holidays. O’Dowd’s Bar & Restaurant were doing their usual brisk business as was The Stone Café.

Awards: Congratulations to the Cleggan Beach Dressage Riding School on their recent awards. 12 year old Elaina Sullivan daughter of John & Siobhan of Innishnee received the highest overall award in Dressage, for a combination of wins that she had over the year plus the National Winter Finals last year, the Cavan Championship and plus her win in England in July. The Sportsman Award went to Pat O’Neill, Ballyconneelly for his winning of the National Winter Finals and The Championship in Cavan, for his category. Well done to you both and to Judy Casaubon and her daughter Siobhan who put in all the hard working with them to bring them to that level.

50/50: The 50/50 was held in Kings Bar Saturday night which went to Paul Keaney. The Lotto also in the same venue on the Sunday night had no winners the match 3’s went to Bob Woods & Mary Connolly with Val Gorham getting the draw & Joseph King the attendance. The Lotto stands at €5’850 and the roll over €15O for next weeks draw which will be held in

National School: The Children of Roundstone National School went on a field trip with Michal Gibbons with Grainne O’Malley from the Community Radio. They all went to see the Eel hatchery at the mouth of Ballinahinch and Michael informed them about how the Landlords of Ballinahinch keep records of stock in the river from that same spot. They then went on to Innishnee, where they were brought to see the Holy Well and then on to The Innishnee Graveyard “St Mathias” where Michael pointed out an ancient cross going back to the 6th century. This programme will be going out later in the year but we will keep you posted on that. It is part of a series which the radio has put together with Michael Gibbons visiting all the schools in North Connemara and familiarising the children with the history of their area. It was a most enjoyable day I tagged along and helped Grainne and with the ferrying of some of the children. I look forward to hearing all the other schools adventures as well as Roundstone’s.

Tidy Town Meeting €500 was raised from the car boot sale and this will go toward flowers or such next year. John & Paul the TUS worker’s are doing Trojan work clearing the back road of Innishnee which will be an excellent route for walkers. Because of Monty Hall’s programme each Sunday on RTE 2, I am sure this will be a popular route this summer as the cottage Monty resided in while they made the documentary is on this route, so it will be important to present it well.

Shoe Box’s: Tomorrow the 15th is the last day to take the Children’s Christmas shoe boxes to Teresa Conneely or to leave them into Ferron’s shop for collection. This is a great cause so do try and support. Also the Vincent de Paul shop will re-open in the old Super Value shop Clifden in the next week or so and I am sure that no more than myself a good Spring/Autumn clean out would not go a miss. They will be looking for good clean clothes etc and Toys in good order also household items.

Wedding: Sarah Henderson daughter of Marian Creane & Mox Henderson married Robbie Patton from Dunloe Co Donegal on Friday last. Sarah was pastry chef in Eldon’s for many years and an excellent one she was too. Congratulations to you both.
