Eva Conroy 6 years of age; Our condolences to Kathleen and John Conroy in Cashel, on behalf of Roundstone for the loss their six year old daughter Eva, who was buried yesterday. Our hearts and thoughts go out to you at this very moment. May little Eva rest in peace.
Evelyn Connolly; Sister to our own Carmel Flaherty and of course to her immediate family on the passing of Evelyn who passed away a few days ago. One can never really get used to loosing ones friends, Evelyn larger than life had a huge part in my life during my time as a trainee manager under Ken Besson in the Royal Hibernian Hotel, in Dublin, at that time Evelyn was head receptionist and was incredibly helpful towards my future career, and remained a good friend ever since. So therefore our thoughts and prayers from Roundstone to you Carmel on the loss of your sister. There was a mass this morning in Christ Church Galway, for Evelyn and there will be a memorial Mass here in Roundstone in early January, with the scattering of the ashes at one of her favourite spots, Ballyrubbic. May Evelyn rest in peace.
Children’s Christmas Party: Maurice Ryan would like to thank Diarmuid Vaughan and Johnny Sheehan of Sheehan events in the decoration of the community Hall and for all the help they gave during the day. The Christmas fair was run by Mary T. King. To James de Courcey for his pony and trap transporting Santé, and the “elf”, John Lean, the “Christmas Cracker”, Kevin de Courcey, what a sight that was as they came down to the car park much to the excitement of the Kids, well and also the adults was just as excited. Maurice would also like to thank the local lotto and the local business’s, face painters, Christina Lowry, for her music, ticket sellers and our tree surgeon Donal Nee for the Christmas tree’s, there was some serious community impute in one way or another. It was a great afternoon, of fun, raffle prizes food and for the adults some hot port. Well done everybody. Photos of this event will be on the Roundstone website under photo events in a day or two.
Zoe Vaughan: Congratulations to Diarmuid and Cynthia on the christening of their baby daughter Zoe which was held on Saturday with Fr Jarleth in the Star of the Sea church. May she have a long and healthy life?
Jim Vaughan: I have just found out, that from the series “This time this Place” one of Jim Vaughan’s photos out of twelve candidates was selected and was shown in the Irish Times December 12th 2011 quite prominently in the Irish times “The Real Ireland” this photo was shot on Clare Island depicting a way of life on the Island. Good for you Jim!
Michael and Patricia Keane Congratulations to Patricia and Michael Keane of Letterdypfe who celebrated their 40th Wedding anniversary recently, with mass in their home. We wish them many more years of health and happiness in their marriage
Notes for the Diary: Tomorrow at 7pm at Eldon’s hotel the national school children of Scoil Eanna will be singing some Christmas Carols, at the same time asking for donations for the Haiti earthquake, they have over a period of time been collecting old mobiles and have so far received a €60 cheque as part of their fundraiser to raise funds for their Haiti project, so we should all turn out and support them and their project. As their principle teacher Mehall Mc Donagh said to me this morning we some times often forget that there are many people in the world through nature’s destruction who need our help.
Blessing of the Roundstone Christmas Tree; On Thursday 22nd at 4.30 Father Jarleth will bless up at the flag poles the Christmas tree, and bless the red hanging ribbons in memory of all those that are sick and for those that died this year and to remind ourselves of all our loved ones that have died over the years. Hopefully there might be the possibility of the arrival of the man in red.
Michael Gibbons Lecture: As part of the events organized by the new events committee, there will a talk with Michael Gibbons in the lower community Hall on Friday December 30th at 7pm, the subject will be on the “Emperor of China”, a “Pope of Rome” and the “lost Fort in Roundstone Bay”, this should be a fascinating talk as all three topic’s have, I am told something in common. The preverbal mulled wine will be served also a donations box will be made available towards the evening’s talk

****************************
Beyond the peaks of Beanna Beola
Of a special place to you I’ll tell,
Take the road through Roundstone Village,
On out by the copper Church bell...
From far and wide they come here
To greet old friends they have met,
At Dog’s Bay, ‘Neath majestic mountain
And watch the fiery summer sunset...
As you walk out over Dog’s Bay beach
Towards the far secluded cove,
Whitest sand by the blue Atlantic shore
With finest cockle-shells interwove...
Heading over by the sand dunes,
Seaside marram grass grows so tall,
Back by verge of hilly meadow,
Such rugged beauty will you enthrall...
Soft scent of lilac heather lingers,
Purple rhododendron there grow,
Wild primroses and red fuchsia.
Abound by the laneway hedgerow...
Oh! You will find true peace there,
Serene and so tranquil...
In beautiful, scenic Dog’s Bay,
At the foot of sweet Errisbeg Hill...
