Roundstone News 16th May 2011

Good evening everybody and welcome to the Connemara Community Radio this is Richard de Stacpoole bring you some news and updates from Roundstone.

Again there is not a lot of news, but I do however have a few snippets for you

First Holy Communion: Congratulations to the parents and of course the kids them selves on the making of their first Holy Communion yesterday under the direction of Father Jarleth, they were Rory Kane, Chloe O’Neil, Martin Coyne, Owen Joyce and Aodhán King. Father Jarleth gave a lovely simple ceremony to bring this event to fruition, and of course we must also congratulate their teachers Ashling Ryan and Michael McDonagh for putting so much effort in their instruction and the rest of the national school kids for their singing as part of the choir accompanied on the Organ with Anne O’Malley, a truly lovely mass.

Tidy Towns Meeting; A community meeting will be held in the lower community Hall relating to the forth coming tidy town’s competition on Tuesday 17th May at 8.30 pm. The planting of 7 barrels and hanging baskets will be discussed. We would encourage as many members of the community to attend to have your impute for this years competition. Three of the barrels so far have been sponsored to plant at a rough cost of €20, the hanging baskets will cost roughly the same.

Fuchsia Hedges: Just to pass a little information on re gardens, I am sure that every body has noticed a great many fuchsia hedges have suffered from the January frost, I was amazed that by cutting my hedges right down just how fast they come back again it will take a bit of time to bring them back to their full glory, but it is worth the effort, so there you are just thought I would pass that one on, because it is certainly working for me.

The 8K Roundstone Bay Run; Of course the 8k Roundstone Bay run takes place this Saturday in aid of the RNLI, the run consists of a figure of 8 loop beginning and ending in the Roundstone village. The après run party will be held in the shamrock Bar in the evening with music from the “Silver Circus” with other traditional Irish music sessions in the village.

The BBC: The executive producer from the BBC came to Roundstone two days ago to research for a UK based travel series, this a television series where they will be taking 3 celebrities on trips around areas that have some sort of nostalgic significance for them.  In mid July they are looking at planning a trip around western Ireland taking in as many sights and activities as possible.  The series is about discovering the landscape and people in the areas for our celebrities to visit. Roundstone has been one of the possible venues for filming them getting involved with the local community in some way.  This may be at a particular event or popular meeting place or in the case of Roundstone for example, meeting some local artists etc. Anyway we will keep our fingers crossed that some thing might come of it, good advertising for Connemara should it come to pass.

Maeve O’Niel: To end off on a good note, I have just heard from Ann Conneelly that her grand daughter Maeve who took part in the Fleadh in Clifden last Saturday for the under nines accordion playing is now county champion for Galway, then on the Sunday for the under 12’s came first for her dancing out of 27 dancer’s Maeve duly received the perpetual challenge cup. Congratulations to her, there is no stopping her now.
